Dearest Uncle Sam,

Though it has been 35 years since you had to go away, we still miss
you dearly and speak your name often. You have always
been with us in spirit and we look forward to the day that we can all
be with you once again.

In your honor,
Mark Montoya

A note from The Virtual Wall

The 3rd Squadron, 5th U. S. Cavalry was activated in 1966 for duty in Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division. The Black Knights, consisting of four Armored Cavalry troops (A, B, C, and HQ) and one Air Cav troop (D Troop), joined in the 9th ID's first major contact of the war -- Operation Colby in 1967.

After the grim Tet attacks in 1968, General Westmoreland reassigned Troops A, B C, and HQ, 3rd/5th Armored Cavalry to the DMZ to bolster armored firepower there. D Troop, 3/5 Cav, remained with the 9th Infantry, stationed at Vinh Long Army Airfield.
