1Lt Terry Alan Mote was killed in action from an aircraft incident that occured on 06/28/70 while performing the duty of pilot. His UH-1C experienced an catastrophic engine failure - shortly after refueling and subsequent takeoff from the SOG Camp at Duc Co west of Pleiku, Central Highlands - with resulting crash. The gunship landed in autorotational mode but as it skidded forward it hit several large tree stumps causing the aircraft to roll several times stopping in an upside down position. The remainder of the gunship crew members were injured and survived, AC WO1 Gordon "Fuzzy" Cockrell, CE E4 Falkner, G E4 Schiemen. 1Lt Mote died on June 1, 1970 from internal injuries, three days after the aircraft crash.
Aircraft: UH-1C gunship tail number 66-00657. 1Lt Mote was based at Camp Holloway in Pleiku and was assigned to the 189th Assault Helicopter Company "Ghostriders" and flew a "Charlie" model Huey gunship in the 189th's Gun Section, the "Caretakers".

Terry, we traveled together from Washington National Airport to Fort Benning for OCS. We went through OCS together, but you wanted to become a helicopter pilot. I went airborne and ended up with the 173rd. It has been so many years since your death and I often wonder what changes you would have made if you had survived. I've thought of you often over those years and was glad to find this memorial to you. You are missed and you are remembered. I hope you rest in peace.
