Corporal Sidney MacLeod served in Mike Company with me from September 1967 til his death in Quang Tri Provence in April-May 1968. He was an articulate, soft-spoken college grad who chose to enlist in the Marine Corps. He was like a brother. I miss him and mourn his loss.

From a friend and comrade-in-arms.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Mike 3/26th lost four men on 09 May 1968:
  • Cpl Sidney B. MacLeod, McLean, VA
  • LCpl Stephen D. McGee, Mishawaka, IN (Silver Star)
  • LCpl Joe L. McGill, Shelby, NC
  • LCpl Philip G. Wigton, Omaha, NE
On 26 December 1967 the 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines, took responsibility for garrisoning Hill 881 South, one of the several peaks which surrounded the Khe Sanh Combat Base. 3/27 stayed on Hill 881S throughout the siege of Khe Sanh; they didn't leave 881S until 18 April 1968. During this period of bitter, bloody fighting 3/26 had 82 men killed in action and hundreds more wounded.

Corporal MacLeod and Lance Corporals McGee, McGill, and Wigton all served on Hill 881S and went with Mike Company when 3/26 was withdrawn to the Quang Tri City area ... but that area had its own problems, and 3/26 was afforded little time before beginning combat operations anew.
