A Note from The Virtual Wall

Landing Zone BUFF was situated on a hilltop about 13 kilometers northwest of Quang Ngai City. On 12 May 1969 LZ BUFF was subjected to a heavy mortar and rocket bombardment accompanied by a ground attack by elements of the 46th Sapper Bn. The action resulted in 27 enemy dead and the loss of at least 7 men from the 1st Bn, 52nd Infantry:
  • A Company:
    • CPT John M. Yeatts, Fort Worth, TX
    • SP4 Robert E. Greth, Reading, PA
    • SP4 William C. Knaus, Cincinnati, OH
    • PFC Alan Asher, New York, NY
    • PFC William E. Schaefer, Deerfield, IL
    • PFC Joseph W. Woodard, Nashville, TN
    • PFC Roger E. Wooster, Munith, MI

  • D Company:
    • CPL Michael J. Mitchell, New York, NY
While The Virtual Wall cannot say with absolute certainty that Corporal Mitchell was killed at LZ BUFF, it is believed to be so.

On 21 May 1966 LZ BUFF was renamed LZ STINSON in honor of LTC William C. Stinson, Jr., Commanding Officer, 1st Bn, 52nd Infantry, who had been killed in action on 03 March 1969 during heavy fighting southeast of Tien Phuoc.
