Donald, I think of you daily and your sacrifice for our country.
Remembering the day we disembarked and were assigned our units,
not knowing we would ever see each other again.
God Bless you and watch over you.

From a fellow Corpsman,

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Hill 861 at Khe Sanh, 25 April 1967 ... The infamous "Hill Fights" were just beginning, and Kilo 3/3 was called in to take possession of a previously unoccupied mountaintop - the twin peaks of Hill 861. Kilo 3/3 started up the hill early on the 25th - and found that the North Vietnamese Army had had the same idea, only sooner. Kilo 3/3 encountered the best part of an NVA regiment dug in on the hilltop - a discovery that cost the lives of seven Marines and sailors and which set off an extremely bitter and prolonged fight for the strategic hilltops. The seven dead were
  • HM3 Michael G. Gibbs, Del Rio, TN (H&S Co with Kilo 3/3) (Silver Star)
  • HM3 Donald H. Monat, Galion, OH (H&S Co with Kilo 3/3)
  • LCpl Patrick J. Gagnon, Detroit, MI
  • LCpl Charles M. Neal, Gallipolis, OH
  • Pfc Dale E. Carmichael, Freetown, IN
  • Pfc Ronald L. Lyvere, Midland, MI
  • Pfc Stephen C. Nelson, Great Falls, MT
