17 May 2002 Flying and soaring through the air Someone else's country in despair. His heart was for the freedom not yet found Yet in hearts of many it was still around. He did his best to fight the war but sadly he gave his life and he couldn't give anything more. What can you say to a hero... Even though Major Morgan is not here today, He served his country until the very end. We may only be 5th graders, but we can honor his memory by honoring our country. He gave all of his tomorrows, so that we could enjoy today! 05 Feb 2003 I went to school with his daughter. I remember visiting his grave with our Brownie troop. I now have a daughter serving our country with the US NAVY. GOD BLESS AMERICA and send a special measure of blessing to our troops. E-mail address is not available.

 

10 May 2004 Hi everyone. Lowell is my grandfather and I was looking him up on the internet and it happened to have the picture that my family has in a frame in my hallway. I have great respect for the men that have served my country and I will also join when I'm older, I'm 14 and am going to join ROTC in my high school and move onto West Point and then be a pilot just like my dad and grandad. 24 Apr 2005 I found this report from the duty officer on the Mohawk Association site: I don't remember the date, but when Major Morgan and SP4 De Mello crashed at Gia Ray Mountain flying 61-2715, I was the 73rd Avn Co Duty Officer. The accident happened late at night when then-Captain Morgan and his Technical Observer SP4 De Mello were on an infrared mission. The weather was just terrible, but Captain Morgan was a dedicated aviator and persisted in completing his mission. I noticed that he was overdue back to Vung Tau and inquires were made. It was reported by a military unit in the area of Gia Ray that a loud explosion was heard toward the direction of the mountain. Search and rescue could not be initiated that night due to the adverse weather conditions. The next morning when the fog and clouds lifted off the mountain search and rescue found the crashed Mohawk approximately 150 below the crest of the mountain. The aircraft was destroyed and Captain Morgan was able to eject but was killed in the attempt. SP4 De Mello (the best I can remember) went in with the aircraft and perished. Both were really great people and professional soldiers. A Note from The Virtual Wall Major Lowell Edward Morgan and SP4 Robert Bruce De Mello were fatally injured when their OV-1C (tail number 61-2715) crashed into the side of Gia Ray Mountain during a period of darkness and inclement weather.
