Corporal Larry Myers was a graduate of Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Illinois. I knew Larry as a child as well as a young man. Larry was in the Marine Corps and I served in the Army. We both went to Vietnam. Larry was a proud Marine. I lost contact with Larry after high school. We graduated in 1966. I was drafted in 1967. Larry went into the Marine Corps shortly thereafter. I am sure he was the epitome of a great Marine. God Bless you, Larry.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 2/5 Marines' Command Chronology for October 1968 advises that 2/5 began participation in Operation MAUI PEAK on 06 October. The Battalion's part in the operation was to run a diversionary attack along Route 4 west toward the Thuong Duc Special Forces Camp while ARVN and other Marine units sought out enemy forces. Golf 2/5 moved out from Hill 52 at 1045, intending to sweep the high ground north of Route 4. By 1100 Golf was in heavy contact with enemy forces, a contact that lasted through much of the day before the enemy withdrew - only to return in an attack against Golf's night defensive position at 0415 on the morning of the 7th. The fighting resulted in two Marines killed in action and about three dozen evacuated - but by 1000 07 Oct Golf 2/5 was again sweeping the hills north of Route 4. The two dead were
  • Cpl Lawrence T. Myers, Cary, IL, H&S 2/5, and
  • LCpl Daniel A. Miller, Pittsburgh, PA, Golf 2/5.
