My friend Cecil C. Olsen was one of my best friends, even though we met while in Basic and AIT. We did many things together and had lots of fun doing those things.

We had big plans for when we got discharged from the Army. Cecil was a lot of fun to be around and I am sure he and I would have succeeded at anything we decided to do.

I brought Cecil home to my folk's place one night because we went out and got hammered and I didn't want him driving home. While trying to get to the back bedroom, Cecil was hugging the trailer wall, dragging his face along the wall and all of the sudden he disappeared. He fell outside the back door onto the ground and all we could hear was his moaning and laughing. We asked him if he was okay and he said yeah but he didn't know what the hell had happened. He was okay, thank God. We all laughed about it the next day.

I miss him a lot and wish he was still with us and most importantly, his family. I feel so badly for his family.

I often think about how it could have been me instead of my FRIEND? I try not to let the guilt consume me, but why him?

I never had a chance to meet my uncle Cecil in person, he was killed in action before I was born. However through family memories, I have always felt he is still very much alive in spirit. Had he lived, I think we would have had a lot in common. Dad has often commented to me in more recent years of how I remind him of Cecil. Even though he passed away almost 5 years before I was born, I have always felt a special connection with uncle Cecil. I wish to thank not only all veterans, but those who were in his unit, or knew him just prior to him being sent into combat. In recent years my dad has come into correspondence with some of the men in his platoon who have helped dad receive some closure (as well as myself and our family). He and Cecil were close brothers, and I can't thank these guys enough for sharing their experiences, they have helped dad a lot.

This year, the Moving Wall is coming to our home town on Memorial Day weekend thanks in part to efforts made by my father and other local volunteers. To myself and my family, this is the ultimate way to honor Cecil, as well as the 58,000 others lost during their service to our great nation. They may be gone, but never forgotten.

Another Memorial Day is here. Last year this time we remembered you and the 58,000 brothers of yours who gave so valiantly by laying down your lives for us with hosting the Moving Wall. This year will be quieter but no less sadder. We miss you ever so much more. Doc was here last year, we have been in touch with Randy, and so many more of your buddies. Mom is with you now and we miss her terribly. Take care of each other until it is our time to join you. God Bless you and keep you safe in his arms.

Love,
Leroy & Kathy
