For whatever reason they have him down as being killed on August 23, 1969. The actual date was August 26th. 13 Nov 2003 First of all, I want to thank Mr. Travis Skaggs for entering my brother's memorial on this website and also thanks to my cousin Betty Lewis for contacting me about this memorial. I'm so sorry that my family never knew of his friends in Vietnam, except for John Pedro who kept in touch for a while, then don't know what happened to him. I am Hayward's younger sister by 3 years. We were both raised by our late maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Peleiholani in Kalapana, HI. I was 16 years old when Hayward (known as Kimo) was killed. I do remember his final visit home in July 1969 for brief R&R but so sadly regret that I didn't get the chance to bid him farewell when he returned to duty. We were notified by the Marine Corps of his death. I'm so proud of my brother to have served his country like other soldiers. He wanted to be a Marine and was well trained for it prior to enlistment. Hayward died as a brave soldier and was buried with great honors at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Hilo, Hawaii. He'll always be remembered as a special person in our hearts and also to those who were close to him and served with him in Vietnam. I have his last letter from Vietnam writing about the extreme hot weather, distinct odor and the countless close calls. His last words were, "Do good in school and graduate." I have seen the replica of "The Vietnam Wall" in Hilo, HI, and twice in Silverdale, WA. Hayward's Marine and high school graduation photos rest on the mantle in my living room. My prayers go out to all those who served in the war and those who survived it, that God will keep you all safe and give you peace of mind to live on....
