2LT ROGER DAVID PARMENTIER

 

6 Dec 2001 Roger, it's been over 31 years now but that awful day when you and Mack were killed is still with me. We only knew each other a short time since you had only been in country one month, but we became fast friends very quickly and there is no doubt in my mind, we would still be today if you had made it. I still remember the way we passed the time in the bush, playing hearts and spades - the only time in my life I ever really enjoyed playing cards. Haven't been able to since. I don't know why things happen the way they do - why we even went on that mission when we were supposed to be going to the rear that day for some R&R; why Captain Dan had you go with Sgt. Eastland and the third platoon on the first chopper when you were the company forward artillery observer and had always been in the command post with Captain Dan, me and the others; why you, Mack and Sgt. Eastland got out of that side of the chopper; why we landed at all in that terrible LZ. I remember the terrible fear on our chopper when the pilot said it was a hot LZ and everyone diving to the ground when we landed and guys kept coming in. And then amid the confusion I saw you laying there and then briefly raise your head but the damage had been done and you passed. I wish I could have done something for you - I will never forget you! A Note from The Virtual Wall Although assigned to A Battery, 2/320th Arty, Second Lieutenant Parmentier was serving as an artillery Forward Observer with B Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, at the time of his death. The two men killed by the booby trap were 2LT Parmentier and CPL John L. McClurg of Earlham, Iowa, B Co, 1st Bn, 327th Infantry. Roger David Parmentier Second Lieutenant, Army of the United States, was buried on 25 August 1970 in Plot R 1914, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado, among other men of courage and integrity.
