According to information obtained from the Grave Application, SGT Rand enlisted in the Army on 22 March, 1962. He was assigned to Germany as he was awarded the Army Occupation Medal for serving in West Berlin.

In addition to the medals above, it also shows he was awarded two skills badges, Sharpshooter for M-14 rifle and 2nd Class Gunner, most likely for mortars. A "2nd Class Gunner" in artillery type weaponry was equivalent to marksman.

Surviving at the time were his mother Alfair Rand Hicks and possibly his father, Earlie Moton, although his father was not mentioned in any of the newspapers.

SGT Rand was buried in Somerville Cemetery, Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama.
