LAND MINE KILLS
FAIRLESS HILLS SOLDIER

A Fairless Hills soldier was killed Monday when a truck in which he was riding struck a land mine just below the Demilitarized Zone in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

A 1965 graduate of Bishop Egan High SChool, Spec. 4 Christopher J. Schramm, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Schramm, enlisted in the Army in October 1965. He had been in Vietnam seven months.

He was killed two days before he was to have gone on a seven day leave to Taiwan, his first leave in 19 months.

"Do What I Can"

He enlisted in the Army and volunteered for duty in Vietnam "because I owed it to my family ... my country to do what I can to make this a better world."

He told his parents, who have not seen him since November 1966, "I volunteered for Vietnam because there's a job to be done."

Exerpt from his obituary

Chris

I do not know you,
But I wish I did.
That much is true,
You were only a kid.
You died in a war,
In 1968.
Shortly after I was born,
May 13th was the date.
I've seen your pictures before,
I remember your face.
Then I see an open door,
Going into a place.
Into a place you used to live,
Oh to meet you, what I'd give.

On May 13, 1968, while en route to Camp Evans,
my Uncle's convoy encountered land mines.
When he jumped from his truck to go to the aid of his fellow soldiers,
my Uncle detonated the mine which took him from this life.
