A Note from The Virtual Wall

Four men of the 118th Assault Helicopter Company died in the crash of UH-1C tail number 66-00530:
  • CW2 Owen Tetsumi Hirano, pilot
  • 1LT Robert Scott Mason, Jr, copilot
  • SP5 Greg Bradford Scott, crew chief
  • SP4 Danny Ray Spencer, gunner
Hirano was flying as number two in a gunship flight providing support to heavily engaged ground troops. As night fell, the weather worstened, and fuel levels dropped, the two UH-1Cs turned for home. While en route, with Hirano at about 600 feet altitude, the flight encountered very heavy rain and went into instrument conditions. Hirano called a right 180 degree turn to exit the rain cell but apparently inadvertently entered a descending rather than level turn. The UH-1C impacted the ground at a fairly high speed and in a 70 to 80 degree dive.
