NOT FORGOTTEN

Mike was a good friend in college, a year ahead of me. He was my ROTC Company Commander when I was a freshman and he a sophomore. He wanted an Army career and looked forward to service and 'Nam. He was there barely 2 months. Had he lived, I am sure he would have retired with a few stars. I can still picture him in uniform striding across the ROTC parade ground, wearing his yellow Armor scarf.

He is forever young in my memory.

Mike and I were very close friends during grammar school and high school. He was one grade ahead of me. I lived about two blocks away from him. I went over to his house a lot and knew his mother, sister, and grandfather. I met his father who was away a lot in the merchant marine.

I was with him the night we rolled his 1946 Ford coupe in the Alum Rock foothills. I have the scar to show for it. I was with him when he broke in the 1940 Ford coupe his grandfather helped him build. It was DeSoto hemi powered (same as the Chrysler) with a LaSalle gear box. The first time we drove it in down town San Jose (the First and Second street cruise scene frequented by thousands) it left rubber for about two blocks. The car was awesome.

The San Jose cruise scene was about 100 times better than the San Rafael cruise scene depicted by George Lucas in American Graffiti.

I think about and remember Mike a lot. They were great old times.
