Norbert "Norbie" Simmons was the oldest son of Charles Simmons and Estephania Rodriguez. He was the oldest of 15 children. He attended and graduated from Davenport High School in 1960. He loved sports and was quite a popular boy. He was kind and well mannered. He had wanted to join the Marines before he graduated but his mother told him he must wait until he graduated. He loved being a Marine. He holds two Purple Hearts, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Commendation Ribbon. He married Josephine Mangune in 1962 in the Phillipines. He is the father of Cynthia, Deborah and Norberta. He is interred at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Davenport,Iowa.

The 9th Marines' Situation Report for 15 June 1966 contains the following entry:

Two of the three wounded who were evacuated died of their injuries -
