Arvel was one of three young men from the small, southern Oklahoma town of Maysville killed in Viet Nam. I don't much about Arvel except that he was a Marine Rifleman and that he died fighting the communist aggressors in South Viet Nam. I do know that his sacrifice helped give the South Vietnamese ten more years of freedom and eventually led to hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese being able to come to America and participate fully in our precious democracy. Arvel, thanks for your sacrifice and may God bless and keep you. Semper Fidelis.

I was with Arvel the night he was killed and it was a sad night. I can remember myself and another corpsman writing a letter to his parents the next day, but don't remember what we wrote. He was fun to be around and did his job very well. I was on the perimeter, just about 50 meters to his right when an RPG or sniper's bullet found it's unfortunate mark. Thanks for this opportunity to put some words down.
