Dear Chuck,

Today is December 21, 2003 ... 36 years to the day since you took leave of this earth. I can easily envision you in heaven with your father, Stevie, Grandma Huhn, and my dad. I'm sure you have watched our earthly undertakings with much interest through the years. I also believe that you have likely interceded for us as much as Our Lord would allow. I think of you often, surprising as that may seem. I don't know exactly why, but I feel a link beyond just being first cousins. Maybe it is because you are the same age as my brother Mike, whose birthday was yesterday. Mike was mercifully spared the agony of going to Vietnam, though he courageously enlisted for military service. I guess God had other plans for him. Mike has a wife and three beautiful children, and is looking forward to being a grandfather some day. Though I am eight years his junior, I have already experienced that privilege, having raised 5 children of my own.

You and your dad must have really given my dad the business the past couple of years, with the way that USC has soundly spanked ND in football. I saw the whole debacle in person last year in the LA Coliseum, and it was very painful ... especially since it occurred on the anniversary of my father's death. Oh well, it's only a football game ... bullsh*t ... just wait until next year!!!!!! As the current California governor would say - "I'll be back!". In the meantime, I hope USC massacres Michigan in the Rose Bowl this year en route to a national championship. They deserve it!!!

Love to you Chuck. Please keep us all in your prayers as you remain in our thoughts.

Your cousin,
John ..........
GOOOO.......IIIIIIRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSHHHHHHH!!!

Dear Chuck,

Happy Anniversary on your admission to heaven. Please continue to pray for us who wait to join you and the rest of our family. Please watch over my daughter Beth during her tour of duty in Iraq. Help her to know that you are with her. Maybe God will assign you to her as her guardian angel.

Love,
John

Chuck and I attended Santa Barbara City College together. The VietNam War was a controversial topic on the campus and we felt many different forces pulling at us about service in the military. He went into the USMC after his sophomore year and I went into the USAF upon graduation from Long Beach State. Today is the 21st of December ... 36 years since the day he died. I still remember his parents being notified of his death on Christmas Eve, 1967. I made four notifications as a junior officer in the USAF. It did not get easier with practice. Semper Fi, Marine!
