A Note from The Virtual Wall

The 1/26 Operations Log for 14 Jan 1967 contains entries for three casualties incurred by patrols in the vicinity of Hill 55, Quang Nam Province:
  • "141505H From: PFA [A/1/26] - WIA report - W 2147691, head, serious, gunshot."
  • "141620H From: PFC [C/1/26] - WIA report - K 2311347 at coords 975595, head, time 141620 - Serious"
  • "141620H From: PFC [C/1/26] - KIA report - S 2263644 at coords 975595, neck, time 141620"
The Alpha 1/26 Marine wounded at 1505 was LCpl Gary M. Welch of Blackwell, Oklahoma. Regretably, on 23 April 1967 LCpl Welch died at the Naval Hospital, Great Lakes.

The Charlie 1/26 Marine wounded at 1620 apparently survived his injuries; no-one with that service number died in Vietnam. The third entry refers to Pfc Frank Suvara, killed in action by gunshot.
