Wayne was from Odessa, Texas, an oilfield city in West Texas near the New Mexico State Line. He was drafted into the Army, but served with distinction. He is remembered by his community and on the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at Midland International Airport, Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.

Wayne is buried in Odessa, Texas at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Wayne attended Odessa High School, last attending in the spring of 1962. He worked in the oilfields before being drafted.

He and four other soldiers were at a listening post in a night defensive position (NDP) when Wayne was shot by a sniper. His parents had reported that in Wayne's letters, he had talked of the Paris Peace Talks.
