Matthew, who was known to all as "Tex", died when he was shot by a member of the 93rd Engr Battalion. The person wanted to drive Tex's bucket loader, but Tex said he was responsible for it and refused.

Tex was an easy-going guy who loved to sing and was respected by enlisted and officers alike. His loss was felt by all in the 571st. He was our only loss during the year the 571st existed.

From a member of the 571st,
Robert Sage
