In memory of SGT Bruce Wayne Thompson. My name is also Bruce Wayne Thompson, and I was assigned to US Army Advisory Team 85 in the Mekong Delta from 1967 to 1969. I was in Vietnam when SGT Thompson was killed in action. Some friends saw his name on a casualty list and mistakenly assumed that I had been killed, which caused a few problems for my family and some friends. I have visited SGT Thompson's name on The Wall, and I offer my prayers for his soul to be with God. May he find peace with God in Heaven. 23 March 2002 SGT Thompson was an infantry Fire Team Leader with my platoon while I commanded weapons platoon and third platoon of A Company. At the time SGT Thompson was killed, the company was on a combat operation near the village of Tien Phuoc, in Quang Tin Province. The company came under heavy fire as the lead platoon crossed a small stream, and a major battle with dug in NVA regulars insued. As the battle progressed it became imperative that my platoon make a hasty crossing at the stream to rejoin the cut off lead platoon. In keeping with his personal bravery and willness to serve, at great personal risk, SGT Thompson led the way in the crossing, securing a foothold on the other side for my platoon, but was cut down by enemy fire shortly after the crossing. SGT Thompson was a good and brave soldier, and a fine combat leader who was greatly missed and mourned by all who knew him.
