SP5 George Tom was flying a combat aviation mission with CWO Robert W. Gardner, WO Stanley J. Miller, and gunner SP4 Gary Fields when their aircraft, UH-1H 66-00870, was shot down near Pleiku, South Vietnam. SP4 Fields jumped from the aircraft before ground impact and although seriously injured survived the incident. The other three men did not.

SP5 George William Tom was a highly respected crew chief and member of the 281st AHC and shall not be forgotten.

George Tom was born and raised in Stanton, Texas, a community 25 miles east of Midland, Texas on Interstate 20 (then U.S. 80). He attended schools at Midland High School and Greenwood High School in Midland County, Texas, and graduated in 1965. He attended Price College in Amarillo, Texas, and DeVry Technical Institute in Dallas, Texas. He was in the second extension of his tour in Vietnam having served 1 year and 10 months in-country, when the helicopter that he was a crew member was shot down and crashed. He did not survive. He is remembered by Martin and Midland County and by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial located at Midland Internation Airport, Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice not be forgotten.
