Bay City Man Dies In Vietnam The Daily Tribune May 16, 1969 Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas A 21-year-old Matagorda County Marine who was scheduled to meet his wife in Hawaii next Tuesday for R&R leave has been killed in the Vietnam war. Marine Lance Cpl. Esteban A. Trevino, Jr. was killed in action Monday, the 18th Matagorda County son to die in the war. Trevino's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esteban A. Trevino of Bay City, were notified of the death Thursday morning. The Marine Corps said Cpl. Trevino died from injuries received when a field mine exploded while the young Marine was serving as a point man on a combat operation. Trevino received wounds in the face and chest. He was treated for the wounds and received the Last Sacraments from a Catholic chaplain prior to his death. Trevino served with the 2nd Platoon, Lima Co., 3rd Batallion, 5th Marines, with headquarters in Da Nang. He was trained in communications and had been serving with an artillery unit in the I Corps area. Trevino was born in Corpus Christi, attended Bay City High School and graduated from high school and training at a Job Corps Center in Nebraska. He had been in the Marine Corps 13 months and reported to Vietnam in October. He was wounded Nov. 30 in the right arm by a mortar round and received the Purple Heart. Trevino was scheduled to leave Vietnam next Tuesday for R&R in Hawaii with his wife, Mrs. Anna Trevino of Port Isabel, Tex. Funeral services will be held in Brownsville, pending the arrival of the body from Vietnam. Trevino is survived by his wife, his parents, one sister, Lupe Trevino, and four brothers, Javier, Adam, Gary and David, all of Bay City. Cpl. Trevino was the Trevino's oldest child. A Note from The Virtual Wall On 12 May 1969, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines was under the operational control of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, participating in a search-and-destroy operation along the north bank of the Thu Bon River, about 4 kilometers north of the An Hoa Combat Base.
