Don graduated from Gallatin High School in 1956. He received his B.S. from Tennessee Tech in May 1961 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. For seven years he was a pilot flying F-8 Crusader jets. He was a flight instructor in Texas for 1 year. Through a computer error, he was transferred into the helicopter division, when the Defense Department learned of the error, they decided to let the order stand. Don died from head wounds when the helicopter in which he was co-pilot was shot down over Quang Tri, Vietnam on September 21, 1968.

(This info is posted in remembrance of Don on behalf of Patricia Doss Syprett - his cousin who loved him like a brother.)
