A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 13 August 1969 twelve Marines were killed in Quang Tri Province. Four were combat engineers from 1st Engineer Battalion and one was a motor vehicle operator from the 1st Motor Transportation Battalion. While the Command Chronologies acknowledge these losses, they do not contain any details of the incident(s). None the less, the similarities in the casualty records for the five men make it seem likely they were involved in the same incident. The five were
  • 1st Engineer Battalion:
    • LCpl Robert F. McClaflin, Corvallis, OR, C Company
    • LCpl Michael J. Thomas, Sanford, NC, C Company
    • Pfc Alfred Barnes, Washington, DC, A Company
    • Pfc Dana E. Means, East Liverpool, OH, A Company

  • B Co, 1st Motor Trans Battalion:
    • LCpl Russell P. Forristal, Willoughby, OH
