Pete joined 3rd Platoon, Delta Company, 1st battalion, 7th Marines on December 13, 1968 one week prior to when I joined the Platoon. From January until late March of 1969 Pete was a member of First Squad of which I served as squad leader. Pete was a quiet Marine. I never had any long conversations with Pete. Pete was closer to his fellow fireteam members, in particular Doug Bratley and Phil Moser. This past June, I met Mark, Pete's younger brother, in DC. Pete was a star athlete while in High School where he quarterbacked the football team.

In the first six months of 1969 3rd Platoon was in contact with the enemy on a regular basis. Pete was there in every battle where he carried out his duties with the quiet resolve which seemed to be his trademark. He was there in the February battles and in May when we crossed over into the "Arizona Territory" with Colonel Dowd. I left Vietnam on June 8, 1969, and Pete was killed by a sniper on July 9, 1969.

The years may go by but Pete's memory is still strong. We must keep it so.
