On 21 November 1966, C Company, 1/5th Cavalry, was engaged by enemy forces while operating along the Cambodian border in Kontum Province, South Vietnam. Thirty-four Americans were killed in action on the battle field. You can see their names on the memorial page for SP4 Louis Castillo.

CPL Vernon was laid to rest at Lincoln Memorial Garden, Ocala, Florida. Not noted in obituary above was the name of his mother, Dorothy. His parents were living on 3rd Street in Ocala at the time of Donald's death.
