Richard Larry Vines was a true friend and a loyal soldier. He died doing what he loved best which was flying. Even as a kid all he could do was talk about flying and building airplanes. Even after all these years he is missed. |

Richard grew up in Bakersfield California prior to joining the U.S. Army. He had graduated from South High School. Four men of the 191st AHC died when their helicopter was shot down by small arms fire, crashed and burned, 4 kilometers northwest of Dong Tam. The aircraft was shot down on 5 June and the men were reported as missing. They were recovered in the days following, and once identified, their status changed from missing to killed in action (Akers on 20 June; Tejano on 10 June; Turone on 17 June; and Vines on 18 June). The men were:
Richard Larry Vines was survived by his mother, Hildegard "Hilde" Belz Cryts (1928-2006) and father Jack Frank Vines (1922-1967), both of Bakersfield. His father enlisted 18 March 1946 in the Army and served as a Military Policeman after WWII. Richard's his mother came to the United States from Mannheim Germany in 1948 as a War Bride, presumably to Jack (unverified). At the time of his death, Richard was also survived by his paternal grandfather, George Leonard Vines (1884-1969). He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Lena Ester (Churchman) Vines (1891-1966). Richard, his parents, and paternal grandparents are all buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Bakersfield, California. - - The Virtual Wall, September 7, 2016
