25 Nov 2003 Theodore Ward and I were classmates at Fort Benning's United States Army Infantry School in 1968. Theo was truly a model soldier as we progressed through the NCO Candidate Course. He had a natural ability to be a leader and that trait was realized by his peers as well as the Tactical NCO's that evaluated each candidate. Theo developed a spirit of aggressiveness, stamina, disicipline, and leadership that made him a top-notch NCO candidate ... he was a pleasure to be around. He took the "FOLLOW ME" school motto meaning to a very high level of excellence. We graduated 04 June 1968 in the 25th Class, 85th Company. Shortly after graduation we both were shipped over to Vietnam. Theo was assigned to the 1st Air Cavalry Division and I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division. We never met again after going to different units, but I always thought about Theo and his high standards of performance. His "lead by example" approach to leadership inspired me and many other young NCO's to always strive to be the best we could be. Theo perished on 08 May 1969 and I just know his brilliant leadership was missed by his men. Theo served in a manner that not only made his family proud, but made the entire U. S. Army proud as well. He is an American Hero and forever my "Nam Brother".
