The following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial.
A brown belt in karate, the Temple Prep School graduate planned to attend Temple University Law School after returning from Viet Nam. The 19-year-old Marine Corps lance corporal, a rifleman, had been on more than 25 combat missions with the 2nd Civil Affairs Group, 3rd Marine Amphibious Force, when he was killed on June 12, 1969. Werts was survived by his parents and a sister.

NOTE: The article is incorrect in translating "2nd CA Group";
LCpl Werts was with the 2nd Combined Action Group.

I was only 7 years old, but I remember Gregory so vividly. He was a neighbor on Mytlewood Street in Philadelphia in 1968; more importantly he was like a big brother to me. Although he stood tall in statue and knew karate, he was a meek individual. I remember when my mother's boyfriend was abusing her, Gregory came to the rescue and asked if she needed any help. Here it is 34 years later, and I still think about Gregory. I will never forget him. God Bless HIS FAMILY, and I thank God for Greg impacting my life in a positive way. HE WAS A MAN'S MAN. I LOVE AND MISS HIM.
