THE MEMORIAL

George Robert Ward was my brother.
I was just 8 years old when he was killed.

I have been trying for a long time to find out about my brother, and I would very much like to hear from anyone who served with him.

THE ACTION

Lance Corporal Ward was a member of Kilo Company, 3/4 Marines. KILO and MIKE companies were positioned on Mutter's Ridge (LZ Sierra), south of the DMZ, and were engaged with the enemy. Helicopter squadron HMM-161 was operating in support of the ground forces.

A CH-46D (Call sign YR-31, BuNo 154841) brought in a load of supplies, then settled in the LZ to take on wounded Marines. The CH-46 was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and burst into fire, with at least one secondary explosion. A dozen Marines and one Navy Corpsman, some in the aircraft and some on the ground alongside, died in the conflagration.

The dead included

  • PFC James A Carpenter, USMC
  • PFC Richard C Chubb, USMC
  • PFC Earl F Falconbury, USMC
  • PFC Ernest R Franks, USMC
  • PFC Michael J Hayes Jr., USMC
