Delta Company was operating somewhere in an area between Hill 10 and Danang. Jeff, as I remember it, was part of a squad who left our lines soon after dark to run an ambush. Jeff was walking point and not long after his squad left the company perimeter they were ambushed. Jeff was killed in the initial burst of fire. I remember that the gunfire did not have the sound that was the trademark of both the SKS or AK47, weapons used by our enemy. Of course the enemy would sometimes carry our M-16 just as we sometimes carried their AK47. One thing was certain; the squad had been ambushed, and a good Marine was dead. We searched the area the following morning looking for spent brass, but none was found. Because the brass had been policed it made the circumstances surrounding the ambush that much more strange. I don't remember ever hearing a definitive answer to the events of that night. Jeff had only a couple of months left on his tour when he met his death. I haven't forgot that night nor have I forgotten Jeff.
