To my Junior Drill Instructor:

As much of a hard-ass as you were, I still miss you.

We were in Platoon 3060, Series 3060, Co. K, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD Parris Island, SC, from July 26, 1966 to Sept. 16, 1966. He was the trainer, and I the trainee.

Semper Fidelis

From his former Marine recruit,
Jesse L. Griffin, Jr.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

For most of May 1968 the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines worked out of the advance base on Con Thien a few kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone. Con Thien (also known as the A-4 Strongpoint and Hill 158) was subjected to regular artillery, mortar, and rocket attacks from NVA forces within and immediately south of the DMZ as well as repeated ground attacks.

On 01 May 1968 two Marines were killed by a different risk of war; quoting from page 6, Encl (3), 1/4 Command Chronology for May 1968:

"At 1020H, while firing an artillery mission in support of 1/4, 4/12 made a 200 mil deflection error. Three rounds impacted in the perimeter. Called for immediate check fire. Two friendly KIA (NBC) and one WIA (NBC)."
The two men killed were from Delta 1/4: SSgt Dan R. Youmans of Jacksonville, Florida, and LCpl Anthony Taylor of Newark, New Jersey.
