Sergeant Henry Ard was killed in Vietnam in October 1966.

Before his tour began, he and I were assigned together at Fort Bragg, where I came to know him well. Henry Ard was a professional in the finest sense of the word ... professional in his duties, professional with his seniors and contemporaries, and professional with the troops placed under him. He was a man of courage, integrity and competency.

I served with Sergeant Henry Ard for about two years, and profited from our association in every possible way. Almost 35 years later, I still pay him the highest compliment that I know for a member of our country's military services:

He was one hell of a soldier!
