07 Jun 2008 "Remembering Buddy" Who was he you ask,      and why the acclaim? Was he a young star      with a well known name? Did he make news      or discover some cure? Was he a young genius,      or exceedingly pure? No, he was a son,      a brother, and friend, One whose young life      would suddenly end. He went into battle      so far from his home. A Marine called to serve,      distant shores to roam. He did nothing different      than so many before. He gave what he had,      no less, and no more. Yes, he was a friend      a brother, a son. His life interrupted      before he'd begun. To honor him now      is to give his death cause. To remember his name,      is a form of applause. He was our friend,      our son, and our brother. Our remembrance of him      is like no other. Someday in the future,      our souls will ascend. In heaven we'll embrace      son, brother, and friend. Written by his sister Ginger Bivins ~ December 1994 ~ Buddy was a well-loved brother who is still missed after all these years. I wish my own children and grandchildren could have known him. His family is very proud of his sacrifice. We still have many fond memories of his short time with us and treasure them always. Each year on Memorial Day it has become my daughter's tradition to go through our album of letters to and from Buddy and remember. Sometimes remembering is all you can do. Thanks for the memories, Buddy. This year on the 40th anniversary of his death, we traveled from St. Louis, MO to visit my mother and were at his graveside on Memorial Day 2008. My 5-year-old great-granddaughter was with us. She found a small yellow flower growing in the grass and placed it on his marker. It was a touching moment and was captured in pictures.
