SGT James Bedgood served eleven-and-a-half months with C Battery 2/13 Artillery, and was drafted into the Army from Louisiana. He served as gun chief for one of C Battery's howitzers at FSB Caroline in Tay Ninh Province. On May 13, 1967, C Battery was supporting a 25th Infantry Division ground unit near Sui Da in Tay Ninh Province. The Battery was shelled with recoilless-rifle and mortar fire for several hours, according to Chuck Schultz of C Battery's Fire Direction Center. While tending to numerous wounded and four dead battery members, the C Battery survivors fired several hundred rounds on suspected enemy locations near Nui Ba Den, the Black Virgin Mountain.

SGT Bedgood was killed during the enemy shelling, along with SSG Hulsa Wolfe, PFC Charles Purcell, and PFC Larry Reissig. Four riflemen from the 25th Infantry Division and two air-crewmen from a helicopter unit were additional fatalities this day near the Black Virgin Mountain.

Chuck Schultz notes that more Red Dragon Clan cannoneers died at FSB Caroline than at any other fire base the battalion used between 1965-1970. Four of the Red Dragon Clan's 25 fatalities occurred this day, May 13, 1967.

SGT James Bedgood was an achiever with the unit, as an E-4 seldom commanded a 105mm howitzer section. It is a position slotted for an E-6 Staff Sergeant. SGT Bedgood received a posthumous promotion to E-5 in recognition for the total effort he gave to C Battery.

Rest in Peace, SGT Bedgood. The Red Dragon Clan remembers you.
