I wore Lt. Col. Begley's name on a POW/MIA bracelet during high school (1969-1973). My mother was born in Kentucky. My father's brother, Vince Schwartz, was lost in WWII, his body never recovered either. Vince was born November 2, 1923 but was in the army.

I am very sad that over 58,000 Americans were lost in the Vietnam War, over 300,000 injured. I'm sad that Lt. Col. Begley lost his life. I etched his name from the Wall during a visit there in December, 1994. God bless those who serve. And God bless those who make the decision to send them into harm's way, to make the right decision.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

A 14 February 1996 JTF-FA report on then-Major Begley's loss contains the following summary:

Since there was no proof that Major Begley had been killed he was carried as Missing in Action, and promoted while in that status, until the Secretary of the Air Force approved a Presumptive Finding of Death on 04 Apr 1978. Colonel Begley's remains actually had been repatriated in 1986 but could not be identified at the time. The 14 Feb 94 report cited above noted that remains 110-86 were undergoing analysis when the report was being written; they were positively identified on 18 April 1986.
