A Note from The Virtual Wall Fifteen members of D Company, 554th Engineer Bn, died on 03 Jan 1969 when the battalion mess hall at Cu Chi was mined: SP5 Ronald K. Bloom, Lakewood, CO SP5 Donald W. Brown, Madison, IN SP5 Moises A. Reyes, El Paso, TX SP5 Michael J. Unsinn, Green Bay, WI SP5 Ted A. White, Dickinson, AL SP4 Paul W. Barnett, Dustin, OK SP4 Glenn E. Case, Live Oak, CA SP4 Joseph P. Colasurdo, Edison, NJ SP4 Eldridge M. Daniels, Chicago, IL SP4 Jerry Dunlap, Malvern, AR SP4 Patrick C. Golliher, Granada Hills, CA SP4 Dennis J. Stanley, Atascadero, CA SP4 Waldon J. Swart, Spicer, MN SP4 Gerhard W. Vanderford, Corinth, MS SP4 Freddy T. Williams, Friona, TX Five and a half months later, on 21 May, elements of the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, and the ARVN 132nd Regional Force Company conducted a cordon and search operation of Giong Viec Hamlet located between Phuoc My and Cu Chi. ARVN soldiers promptly captured a VC squad leader who said there were 20 other VC in the hamlet. The RF Company and two platoons from Company B/1/5 made a sweep of the area, finding a number of Viet Cong dead and capturing six VC along with weapons, ammunition and equipment. Among the POWs was a nurse who had previously worked for the 554th Engineer Battalion. The nurse was instrumental in the capture of 3 females employed at Cu Chi Base Camp who worked for the VC and were involved in the mining of the 554th Engineer Battalion mess hall. SP5 Ronald K Bloom is remembered on the Colorado Vietnam War Memorial. He was buried on 13 January 1969 in Plot R-1231, Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, Colorado, surrounded by other men of courage and integrity.
