A Note from The Virtual WallSP4 Monty Boyer was injured in Vietnam, evacuated to the United States, and died on 7 Sep 1970 while a patient in the burn unit at Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Although The Virtual Wall has obtained both his Record of Assignments and the death certificate issued by Brooke Army Hospital, neither document gives the date of injury. The DoD casualty file says that SP4 Boyer was a non-hostile casualty, and to a degree the death certificate agrees: it states that cause of death was due to "bilateral bronchopneumonia" - but it also states that his illness was secondary to a "combat injury", specifically "Burns 35% total body surface" received some five weeks before his death. The Army Adjutant General's database (the "TAGCEN" file) doesn't give the date SP4 Boyer was injured but it does record the circumstances of his death as "CURRENT STATUS: Hostile Dead; Died of WoundsRegretably, names and service numbers are redacted on TAGCEN records for wounded/injured personnel and the records themselves frequently have blank data fields. Never the less, a record does exist for a Regular Army SP4, MOS 62E20, born in 1949, who arrived in Vietnam in April 1970, and who was injured in Binh Duong Province under circumstances which match those in SP4 Boyer's TAGCEN casualty record. That person was injured on 27 July 1970, a little more than five weeks before SP4 Boyer died in Brooke Army Hospital. It appears the DoD casualty list is in error, and that SP4 Boyer died as the direct result of a hostile injury incurred on 27 July 1970. The death certificate says SP4 Boyer was buried in South Park Cemetery, Roswell, New Mexico. |
