SGT Larry Wayne Barnard died from wound received while on a combat operation when his unit engaged a hostile force in a firefight. He was reported missing on 13 February 1968. His body was later recovered, identified, and he was declared killed in action on 29 February 1968.

During this same fight, SP4 Jack William Grandahl, Ironwood Michigan was also declared missing on the 13th and was recovered, identified, and declared dead by 21 February 1968.


SGT Barnard was survived by his mother Verena "Rena" (Nicely) (1917-1992) and father Harrison "Red" Barnard (1912-1983) and a sister.

He is buried with his parents in Lynnhurst Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.
