In addition to the medals above, SP4 Barrett was awarded the South Vietnamese Military Merit Medal, one of the highest medlas awarded to enlisted and non commissioned officers. Established in 1950, it was awarded for valor in combat. He was also awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Also established in 1950 and awarded for valor in combat, for individuals and units.

The official entry on his casualty report shows: "Individual was killed while at a night defensive position when the area came under attack by a hostile force".


Local area papers from Fort Valley, Georgia reported that SP4 John Harold Barrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Barrett died in action in Vietnam.

He had begun his tour in Vietnam on September 17, 1969. He was a graduate of H. A. Hunt High School in 1967 and had enlisted in the Army in 1969. He was survived by his parents, two brothers Loony and Andrew Barrett, and sister Miss Lennie Barrett, all of Fort Barrett.

John Harold Barrett is buried in Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville National Historic Site, Macon County, Georgia.
