A Note from The Virtual Wall

In early February 1968 the TET Offensive was in full swing and the installations around Danang, where the 7th Communications Battalion was based, were under heavy attack by NVA and VC forces. The 7th Comm Command Chronology for February notes that
"During the first 14 days of the month an almost 100% alert status was maintained on the Battalion perimeter" and that "Provisional infantry platoons from the Battalion were deployed ... on nine occasions. One operation [on 06 Feb] resulted in four (4) Battalion personnel KIA and two (2) WIA (Evac)."

The 1st Reserve Platoon under 1stLt J. W. Pok was deployed to the Tuy Loan River bridge at 0730 on 06 Feb and was engaged by enemy forces at 1530. The four men killed in the action were

  • Cpl William W. Norman, Charlotte, NC, Company unknnown
  • Cpl Nabor R. Tafolla, Oelwein, IA, RRC Company
  • LCpl Howard D. Akehurst, Vancouver, WA, HQ Company
  • LCpl Ivyl R. Bender, Pleasantville, IA, RRC Company
