A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 22 Oct 1971 UH-1H tail number 66-16917 of the 116th Assault Helicopter Company was flying a resupply mission from Chu Lai. The weather was bad and the first attempt was aborted. The second effort fared no better; decreasing ceilings forced the pilot to proceed at low level through a valley. The aircraft entered clouds and impacted a hillside. One aircrewman and four passengers survived the crash, but four men did not:
  • 116th AHC aircrew:
    • WO Roy D. Barnes, Modesto, CA, pilot;
    • WO Pat G. Brannon, Dayton, OH, copilot; and
    • SP5 Daniel G. Dye, Cupertino, CA, crew chief.

  • Passenger:
    • SGT Randall E. Maggio, Wonder Lake, IL, E Co 1/6th Infantry.
