Allan Ray Chaffin is my precious older brother. He was killed by a sniper on Mother's Day, 1967, while he was going back to help a fellow Marine who had been wounded. He was the Platoon Leader and the oldest in his Platoon at the tender age of 20.

I loved him (and still do) with all my heart. He was the perfect brother and son. Although he was 5 years older, he would take me places with him, sometimes even on his dates!! He always considered me his "little sister, Pammy" because for 2 years he had asked Santa for a baby sister for Christmas. The second year he got "me" two days after Christmas. I could not have asked for a more wonderful brother. He was handsome, good and kind. He loved and had a very special bond with our mother who was absolutely devastated by his death, as we all were.

I thank God there were and are young men like my brother who were willing to give their lives for us, our freedom and our way of life. I read on another memorial where someone had said "nobody cares about these young men anymore". Not true, not true. I will ALWAYS honor the memory of my brother and the other 58,000 people named on this wall. God Bless America!
