27 Dec 2004

George Childress died bravely in Bien Hoa Province. He was carrying an M-60 machine gun and when a sniper fired at his patrol he ran toward the area where the sniper was to fire his machine gun. He stepped on a land mine. I was carrying the ammo for George that day. The short time that I knew George I found him to be a wonderful and kind man.

George was my classmate, class of 1965, Holcomb, Missouri. I have through the years visited his grave at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, but not for a long time now. But he is often in my thoughts, another kid from a small town, who died a long way from home, in another war, now mostly forgotten, even by those who should have remembered well its lessons. I have lived these 40 years longer than George, but I have never forgotten him and never will. I still have my yearbook from that time when we graduated, in which he wrote not to forget him. He was a poor boy, who picked cotton like I did, who left a wife who I never knew and a son who bore his name. He was my friend in that time. He will always be in my heart.
