EPITATH FOR A SOLDIER
Syria 1941

Build me no monument should my turn come;
Please do not weep for me and waste your tears.
Write not my name on honour rolls of fame
To crumble with man's memory through the years.
Wear no dark clothes, speak in no saddened voice
Seeking rare virtues which did not exist;
Just let me lie under the cool sweet earth
And sleep in peace, where I will not be missed.

I ask one thing, that in still far-off days
Someone who knew me should in their daily round
Suddenly pause, caught by some sight or sound,
Some glance, some phrase, some trick of memory's ways
Which brings me to his mind. Then I shall wait
Eager with hope: perhaps to hear 'How great
If he were with us still.' Then, at the end,
All that I wish for - just: 'He was my friend.'

Every year at Christmas time I think about Dan.
We shared the same "Hootch" and our rooms were next door to each other.
Know that you are remembered and missed.

Happy Birthday, 2003.

You are missed, loved and remembered, especially now with other servicemen fighting and dying.

Before Dan left for the war he was helping me paint and remodel a house I had just bought. He accidentially broke a window pane between the living room and an enclosed porch. I never replaced the broken pane. It is still Dan's window and served as a reminder of him and how he was willing to help when needed.

It saddens me to know that politicians' actions helped take you from our family, and it saddens me even more knowing that they haven't learned anything from the past. But what saddens me the most is that I never had the chance to meet you. We miss you.
