The Mission

On 29 October 1967, a UH-1D (tail number 65-10123) of the 57th Medical Detachment launched on a night MEDEVAC mission. The weather was marginal with scattered thunderstorms, low ceilings, low visibility, and turbulence. While en route the pick-up point, the aircraft crashed near Nui Ba Den. Four crewmen died in the accident:
  • 1LT Thomas James Chiminello, aircraft commander
  • WO1 Forrest De Vere Rains Jr, copilot
  • SP5 Lawrence Lano, crew chief
  • SP5 Herbert C Donaldson Jr, medic
