A Note from The Virtual Wall

On 17 Sep 1967 D Company, 229th AHB, was conducting a combat assault about 20 kilometers west of An Khe. During the assault the guns on WO Dechene's Huey jammed and the aircraft commander decided to land on Highway 19 near the hot LZ to clear them. Unfortunately the chosen landing spot was under observation by enemy troops, who assaulted the aircraft while the crew were working on their weapons. Although the aircraft commander was able to lift off, WO Dechene was fatally wounded in the action.
