Tim Dineen was a member of the Vallejo High School Swim Team. He graduated with the Vallejo High Class of 1963. Although he was a generally quiet person, he was well liked by everyone. I particularly remember Tim as a very smart young man. He was the kind of guy that you wanted to help you with your studies.

The last time that I saw Tim was when we both were getting our physical exams at the Oakland Induction Center in 1967. We conversed with each other, while we were in line, that neither one of us wanted to be there. We both received our draft notices, but I was granted a 1 year deferment in order to finish college and during that time I was recruited into the California Army National Guard. The month that Tim died, I was taking my Basic Training at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Rest in Peace, Tim. I often think about you.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

Although most Americans who know anything about the Viet Cong's 1968 Tet Offensive tend to think only of Hue City and the American Embassy in Saigon, there were VC/NVA attacks all across South Vietnam. Kontum City, an important provincial capital in the Central Highlands, came under attack on 30 January and was not considered secure until 07 February. During those eight days thirty US soldiers died in the fighting around Kontum, ten of them from the 1st Bn, 22nd Infantry on 05 Feb:
  • A Company:
  • C Company:
    • 2LT Harold A. Kram, St Louis, MO
    • SSG Rembert Crawford, High Point, NC
    • SP4 Larry V. Claspill, Kansas City, MO
    • SP4 Lawrence G. Grassi, Bradford, PA
    • PFC Gary L. Campen, Washougal, WA
    • PFC Timothy J. Dineen, Vallejo, CA
    • PFC Thomas A. Marchut, Sayreville, NJ
    • PFC James E. Stover, Detroit, MI

  • HQ Company:
    • 1LT William E. West, East Granby, CT
