James' home of record is Sawyer, Oklahoma, but he had lived in and attended school in Odessa, Texas. James died in a non-hostile situation while in Vietnam. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans Memorial located at Midland International Airport, Midland, Texas. May his sacrifice never be forgotten.

James was born in Odessa, Texas and attended schools here. He enlisted in the Army at Portland, Oregon using Sawyer, Oklahoma as his home of record which was his grandparent's address. His family moved all over the country as his father was engaged in oilfield work. At the time of his enlistment at age 17, his father was working in Alaska. He died from an undisclosed illness at the 249th General Hospital at Camp Zama, Japan. He is buried at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Odessa, Texas. His headstone shows he was awarded the Purple Heart.
